An Insider’s Guide to Sag Harbor

In partnership with Stay Marquis

The most “beachy” town of all the beach towns in The Hamptons, Sag Habor is guided by its mariner’s roots: with the wharf in town, boating is the lifeblood of this hamlet, and it gives the town a saltier air in the best way. Main Street in Sag Harbor has a classic Americana vibe with mom and pop shops that cater to a year-round community, different from some of the other towns out east. The antique shops are an insider secret with interior designers, and the town’s famous saltbox, Greek Revival and Federalist style homes in the village even have their own historical walking tours to guide you around them. The restaurant scene is arguably one of the best out east, with stellar options ranging from seafood to ice cream and more. What was once a whaling town has blossomed into a modern day quintessential American beach town, and happens to be one of our very favorite places out east. Read below for our recommendations on where to eat, shop, and relax in Sag Harbor.

Where to Eat

Le Bilboquet: The Upper East Side famed eater is the scene and be scene locale; order the cajun chicken, champagne with sparklers not included.

Estia’s Little Kitchen: An if-you-know-you type of spot — it looks nondescript from the outside, but the food is delicious. Get the breakfast burritos, you won’t be disappointed.

The American Hotel: We’re partial to breakfast or brunch in the Orangerie; a classic Americana hotel and restaurant with an “everyone knows your name” vibe that’s worth visiting.

Baron’s Cove: Delicious cocktails, small plates, and dinner — perfect for any time of day, really. Eat overlooking the pool for double water views,

Carissa’s Bakery: The most perfect hostess gift you could bring; everyone will thank you and ask for seconds.

Dopo La Spiaggia: From the Tutto il Giorno restaurant proprietors, casual Tuscan fare meets the bay in the best way.

Sag Pizza: Casual fare, perfect for a quick meal or with the littles in tow.

Sag Harbor Kitchen: From a Michelin-starred chef, comes this new iteration of an old Sag Harbor restaurant – think seafood, sunsets, and cocktails.

Grindstone Coffee & Doughnuts: Coffee and doughnuts – enough said.

Big Olaf: The best waffle cone ice cream you could dream of – kid-tested, parent-approved.

Sagtown Coffee: Pro tip- beware of the long lines and get there early in the AM.

Beacon: On the water, seafood-centric, beautiful.

Buddhaberry Frozen Yogurt: A frozen yogurt fever dream, always a hit with the littles (and the grown-ups.)

Where to SHOP

Provisions Natural Foods Market & Café: The best place to find provisions to pack a picnic lunch for the beach (or to sit by the wharf and eat a sandwich.)

Goop Sag Harbor: A curated selection of GP’s favorite things? Sign us up.

Joey Wölffer: Hand-picked favorites from one of the veritable queens of Hamptons chic.

Monc XIII: A beautifully edited interiors shop with gorgeous mid-century modern offerings, from vintage to antique, as well as a smaller selection of home accessories; a favorite with interior designers in the know.

Cavaniola’s: The best cheese shop in the Hamptons, plus a great wine cellar.

Bloom: Another favorite among interior designers; their selection of glassware and tabletop is bar none.

Katie Leede & Company: Beautiful antique and vintage furniture and home pieces; beloved by interior designers. (Sensing a theme in Sag Harbor?)

Sag Harbor Books: A relatively new addition to the scene in Sag Harbor, this is a perfect spot to pick up a beach read or a hostess gift.

Sage Street Antiques: An interesting mix of vintage art and home decor.

The 1818 Collective: A must-stop-shop for interior designers and vintage aficionados alike.

What To Do

Art & Architecture’s “Walking Tour of Historic Sag Harbor”: If you’re an architecture aficionado, this walking tour will be up your alley.

Beaches: Havens Beach, Foster Memorial Beach, and Windmill Beach are great options for families, and Circle Beach is a great place to watch the sunset.

Bay Street Theater: Sag Harbor is home to a healthy and lively art and theater community; you can find concerts, workshops, masterclasses, and more going on here at any given time.

Elizabeth Alexandra Morton National Wildlife Refuge: Beautiful hiking and biking trails, plus a stunning beach and amazing wildlife are to be found here.

Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum: Located in an 1845-era building right on Main Street, the unmistakable museum is home to a wide-ranging collection of historical objects, along with contemporary exhibits.
